Etiquette for a healthcare professional extends beyond just polite behaviour and manners. It is a way of establishing trust with patients and colleagues in order to present yourself as a trustworthy, confident, and professional healthcare worker.
Here are a few professional etiquettes for healthcare workers to advance their healthcare career and help them do their job more efficiently:
- Introduce yourself: Take the initiative to acquaint yourself with patients. Introduce yourself in a friendly and professional manner. While introducing yourself, remember to mention your position so that the patient knows to whom he or she is speaking.
- Make eye contact: During speaking, focus on the patient instead of the surroundings or the computer.
- Be polite: Always be kind, generous, patient, respectful, and attentive to your patients to make them feel valued. Use polite language and smile whenever needed.
- Be attentive to the patient’s questions: Practise active listening skills like nodding at the patient or restating key points. Make sure to limit your interruptions.
- Be truthful: Never withhold the truth from patients, even when it may lead to their distress.
- Do not discriminate: Provide equal healthcare treatment and services to every individual, irrespective of their gender, caste, colour, etc.
Along with these, a few other common etiquettes include protecting patients’ privacy, following a dress code, being accountable, and being truthful with the patients.
