A medical laboratory technician is an integral part of the healthcare sector and plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients through clinical laboratory tests.
They work collaboratively with other healthcare workers, including doctors, surgeons, and nurses, in order to assess a patient’s health.
As a MLT, you will have to deal with the biochemical, pathological, and microscopic examination of human cells, tissues, and fluids for diagnostic purposes. You can specialise in areas including microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, histotechnology, etc.
Medical lab technicians have a wide range of roles and responsibilities. A few of the day-to-day tasks include the following:
- Collecting specimen samples
- Labelling, performing lab tests on samples collected, and analysing results
- Ensuring quality control of collected samples
- Preparing samples and processing them as needed
- Making note of the findings
- Passing the findings to the main pathologist
- Handling laboratory equipment, etc.
Medical lab technicians can work in hospitals, laboratories, and diagnostic centres, performing tests, working with multiple lab equipment, and recording the results of diagnostic tests.
