Communication means to convey something and make sure that it is understood by the person receiving the information.
Healthcare workers care for patients on a daily basis, and hence it is important for them to be able to communicate with the patients easily.
Within the healthcare industry, just providing information is not enough.
The purpose of communication includes:
- Providing information
- Comforting the patient
- Helping the patient understand their condition
- Encouraging them to communicate back
The same can be explained with the help of an example:
- A nurse informs the patient about medication they will be given [providing information].
- The nurse then speaks with empathy and convinces the patient that the medication is being given to improve their condition [comforting the patient].
- The same medication is then prescribed to the patient and the intake procedure is explained to the patient [teaching them the use].
- Lastly, now since the patient is comfortable and under treatment, they are asked to give feedback on any discomfort or improvement in their conditions since the intake of the medicine [encouraging them to communicate back].
Not only nurses, but all healthcare workers including phlebotomists, medical lab technicians, dialysis technicians, patient care assistants, doctors and specialists need to be good at communication, since it helps with:
- Better understanding of the situation
- Faster work processes
- Effective diagnosis & treatment
- Smooth operations
- Preventing miscommunication
- More efficient patient care
- Keeping the internal and external affairs in sync
- Customer satisfaction
Communication is a skill that can be developed and improved over time.
